The Botnet Business Proposition

Charlie Schluting wound down his series on the botnet ecosystem this week with "The Botnet Ecosystem: What's the Point?."

In a nutshell, the point is "money."

I'm glad he took the time to go into the ways in which gaming search engines is a big part of how botnets get on with their business. The first time I was ever slammed with a comment spam attack, I shook my fist at cruel fate and wondered how the people who turned their spambot loose on me could possibly think anyone would follow their links. Then it dawned on me (and everybody) that the real game wasn't the direct eyeballs ... it was the PageRank.

So it goes with botnets. What used to look like clumsy "direct marketing" looks a lot more like a clever pool player at work.
